Deadly Days Roadtrip Characters: Roster and Playstyles

Deadly Days: Roadtrip advertises "10+ characters", and the retail build delivers a roster where each survivor changes one rule rather than one stat. The default survivor teaches the backpack; the Vampire removes your weapon; the Carver turns triggers into turrets. This page covers the confirmed roster, what each character wants you to do, and how much of the unlock is actually documented.

How survivors work

Every survivor has a character item: a signature object that starts in their backpack and cannot be found on other characters by default. The item defines the playstyle. You can still build around any weapon you find, but the character item is the reason to pick that survivor.

Unlocks happen in two steps: meet a condition in a run, then pay duct tape at the base. Some conditions are explicit achievements; some are map events; a few are still community knowledge rather than developer documentation. Where a step is unverified, this page says so.

The confirmed roster

The Survivor (default)

Item: Pistol. Playstyle: the baseline. A small backpack, a reliable weapon, no gimmick. This is the character to learn the grid on; everything else assumes you understand it. Unlock: available from the start.

The Vampire

Item: Bats. Playstyle: starts with no weapon, only a handful of bats. Every level-up adds another bat, the bats deal melee damage, and they can life-steal. The build is level-driven rather than loot-driven: you want XP, attack speed, and survivability, not a rifle. Unlock: meeting the Shady Merchant is reported to be part of the condition. The full step is not documented in-game; treat the merchant encounter as the trigger to watch for.

The Carver

Item: Pumpkin Turrets. Playstyle: turrets are triggerable items that fire when another item triggers. The Carver is a trigger-grid character: the more triggers you stack, the more turrets fire. It pairs naturally with the Cogwheel and with fast weapons. Unlock: on the Fields map in the meadow biome, loot the Pumpkin Patch to get a Pumpkin, keep it in the backpack until the map boss is defeated, and place a knife next to it. This one is documented well enough to follow step by step.

Bushy

Item: Trap Seeds. Playstyle: seeds sprout into deadly traps, and the Rooting status locks enemies in place. Bushy gets bonus crit against rooted enemies, which makes her the best support for burn zones and area damage. Unlock: the "Sharp-Shooter" achievement — kill 1000 zombies with a rifle.

Penny the Clown

Item: Funny Balloon. Playstyle: a balloon homes on enemies, explodes, scales with level, and self-pops after a few seconds. It is periodic or trigger-based depending on your build, which makes Penny flexible but not specialised. Unlock: the "Juggler" achievement — have three Rubber Balls in your backpack and active at the same time.

Santa

Item: Presents. Playstyle: airstrikes that sometimes leave gifts. Collecting gifts makes the ability stronger, so Santa rewards moving through the aftermath of a strike rather than watching it. Unlock: the condition is tied to the holiday update content. Check the achievement list for the current step; the base shows the tape price once it is met.

The Surfer

Item: Surfboard. Playstyle: surf instead of dash. The movement is faster and more committed than a dash, which suits players who plan a line rather than react. Unlock: have six dashes' worth of stamina in a run.

The Reaper / Death

Item: the reaper's own kit. Playstyle: the secret character. High risk, high damage, and a skill ceiling that assumes you already know every boss. Do not chase it on your first account. Unlock: overstay a stage until the reaper appears, then let it kill you. The full method is in the death unlock guide.

The Banana

Item: banana-themed kit. Playstyle: a joke character with a real build. The banana costume is findable in the base after your first apple, and the character is tied to the banana suit. Unlock: costume and character steps overlap; check the base after the first apple.

The Astronaut

Item: astronaut kit. Playstyle: a map-event character. The unlock is tied to a "?" event rather than an achievement. Unlock: take the unknown event when it appears and follow the prompt. The exact map is random, which is why this one takes multiple runs.

The Sheriff and the Chicken

Item: signature kit each. Playstyle: both appear in the achievement and community data, and both have dedicated build searches. Their unlock steps are not fully documented; treat any guide that claims a single-step unlock with suspicion.

Who to unlock first

If you want a new experience rather than a power upgrade:

  1. Bushy — the rifle achievement is straightforward and her root changes how you fight.
  2. The Carver — the Pumpkin Patch route is learnable and the turret build is distinct.
  3. Penny — the Rubber Balls condition is easy to satisfy once you know to look for them.
  4. The Vampire — the most different character, but the hardest early game.

The character tier list ranks them for a first clear rather than for novelty.

Character items and the Costume Shop

The Costume Shop lets a survivor use another character's signature item after the "Multiple personalities" achievement, paid in duct tape. That is a genuine build opening: a Carver with bats, or a Vampire with turrets, changes the trigger math. It is also expensive, so treat it as a late-game project.

Verify an unlock step in your own build

Unlock conditions are the part of a roguelite most likely to change in a hotfix. If a step here does not work, check the in-game achievement description before spending duct tape; the achievement list is the authority, and this page is dated for a reason.

FAQ

How many characters are in the game? The store page says 10+, and the confirmed roster above covers the named survivors. More may be hidden behind events.

Do character items drop for other survivors? Not by default. The Costume Shop is the exception.

Can I change character mid-run? No. The survivor is chosen at the start.

Is the Reaper a character or a boss? Both. It appears as a hunter when you overstay, and it is unlockable as a survivor.
